Disaster Epidemiology uses epidemiology to assess the short- and long-term adverse health effects of disasters and to anticipate health consequences of future disaster events. Epidemiology methods helps characterize acute and communicable disease, and environmental health, occupational health, chronic disease, injury, mental health, and behavioral health elements.

Additionally disaster epidemiology uses surveillance to provides situational awareness by provides information that helps establish needs and to plan for and response to an event. Additionally, it further informs leaders on appropriate decisions and resource allocation.
